Showing Up – What Do You Want From Me?

“And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another”  (Heb. 10:24-25a, NRSV)

Bringing together groups of men around faith topics can be intimidating. Whether they’re invited to participate in faith building conversation, prayer groups, or Bible Studies, many guys may be hesitant. We think, “Is this really something I want to commit to right now?” or wonder “What am I going to get out of this?” or maybe even ask, “Do I want to hang out with these guys?”  I get it. I live in Las Vegas – there is always something going on, another thing to see, and people to meet. Many of us have work to do and families to be with. Overcoming the resistance to gather around faith and life topics with some may be difficult at first.

Gathering with other men of faith matters. It is important, and it’s difficult to form relationships when we see each other just one Sunday a week. Having a low barrier of entry is key. Assure guys that they don’t need any special knowledge. Jumping in and getting to know each other is the main topic.

Here are some tips to get the gathering started:

Personal Invitation. Inviting men face-to-face is best. Email and social media can work, depending on the person.

Consistency. If one can’t make it this week, they can know the group will be there next week.

Be Few, But Mighty. Small groups rule. This allows guys to get deeper in the conversation, be less hesitant to share their thoughts and ideas, and grow closer together.

Pick a time that works for all. Times will vary. We meet at 7:30 Friday mornings at a local coffee shop. Checking in on the list day of the week helps us unwind and prepare for the weekend.

Meet in Public. Sure, you could meet in the church basement, but that’s not where we live. Our faith and life lead us out of the church building and into the world. Meet in a place where you can encounter others.

Getting started with a small group of guys to meet around topics of faith and life can lead to deeper relationships, growing faith, stronger husbands and fathers, and more dedicated leaders in our faith communities. The first step is just showing up!
